INCREASING cases of obesity and diabetes, and an ageing population, are providing a silver lining for Cheshire's buoyant Advanced Medical Solutions.

The Winsford-based company, which manufactures wound dressings containing silver and seaweed and supplies a medical `super glue' to seal wounds, is benefiting from favourable demographics and health trends.

Revenues for the six months to June 30 rose 24 per cent from £7.9m to £9.8m and pre-tax profits soared 80 per cent, from £700,000 to £1.2m.

Strong trading has continued into the second half.

Seaweed is highly absorbent and helps the healing process, while silver helps to prevent infection.

AMS said its silver technologies continue to be a major growth driver for its woundcare division, its biggest business segment with sales of £8.1m.

It sells dressings to hospitals, nursing homes and burns clinics in the UK and in the US and Europe after it secured new marketing and distribution agreements.

Chief executive Don Evans said AMS was also making progress with its own dressings brand ActivHeal, which it sells to the NHS.

Sales of wound sealants grew by £100,000 to £1.8m but AMS is hoping it will gain approval for entry into the US market next year, which will provide a major boost.

Earlier this month, AMS announced it has agreed to combine its two sites in Winsford into one facility comprising offices, laboratories, manufacturing and warehousing. The site will be fitted out early next year at a cost of £4m. AMS employs 150 in Winsford but the new site will have room for expansion.

Chairman Dr Geoffrey Vernon said: "AMS operates in a market whose demographics are extremely favourable, underpinned by an increasing need for products to treat chronic and acute wounds.

"The group remains well-placed to continue to deliver organic growth."

Shares slipped 0.76 per cent, or 0.25p, to 32.75p after the announcement, valuing the business at £46.2m.

Analysts expect sales of £19.7m for the full year compared with £16.9m in 2007, and profits of £2.3m - up from £1.9m.
