Dr Kostya Novoselov, 34 (pictured), was selected from more than 300 nominees under 35 following his discovery of graphene - a one-atom thick material derived from graphite.
It has been hailed as a super-material and could transform how computer chips are made, as well as being used in liquid crystal displays.
Dr Novoselov was picked out by a panel of expert judges and the staff of Technology Review for his work with Professor Andre Geim. Technology Review, published by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, describes Dr Novoselov as `one of an elite group of accomplished young innovators who exemplify the spirit of innovation'.
