Rok mothballs development

A £50m business park development in Cheshire has been put on hold because of the economic slowdown.

Rok Developments had teamed up with the Royal Bank of Scotland for the scheme in Wilmslow on a site left vacant by Huntington Life Sciences.

Work was due to begin around now, but the project has been moth- balled until conditions improve, said Rok Developments boss Stuart Longbottom.

"It's not going ahead in the short term," he said.

"It's still a good development site, but there are not an awful lot of occupiers out there. We did not feel confident starting the development."

News of the postpone- ment came as the Rok group said it would cut around 200 jobs out of its 5,500 workforce nation- wide. Rok has scaled down its property development operations and is reducing capacity in the private sector, new-build market, although it continues to make progress in social housing and education.
