RETAIL John Lewis suffered double-digit sales falls at its Trafford Centre and Cheadle stores last week, figures showed today.

The retailer, regarded as a bellwether for the high street, said sales during the week to last Saturday tumbled by 15.1 per cent at Cheadle and by 10.6 per cent at the Trafford Centre.

Overall sales for the chain slipped 4.5 per cent.

Director Dan Knowles said John Lewis enjoyed a strong first half of the week then suffered as a result of warm weather across the country.

Fashion was the best performer, in particular womenswear, but were still down 1.5 per cent. Products for the home suffered most, with a 10.4 per cent slump, although sales of outdoor living goods surged 34 per cent. At the half-year stage, John Lewis sales are 0.6 per cent up on 2007.

Branches are gearing up for the key `back to school' period and Mr Knowles said the group was `full of confidence' that it would trade well in a tough consumer market.
