Oakwood Engineering, based at Eccles, has secured a deal to design steelwork for the Shard London Bridge, a 1,000ft skyscraper which is being built at a cost of around £1.2bn. The 95-storey tower will feature a five-star hotel, flats, a public piazza and offices.
It will contain more than 13,000 tonnes of steelwork, with Oakwood's team detailing more than 17,000 pieces.
Managing director Harry Brown, 63, who founded Oakwood in 1981, said the company had also clinched a contract to produce drawings for 20,000 tonnes of steelwork for a bridge linking the M74 and M8 in a £770m project for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Mr Brown, whose management team includes son Chris, said today: "These two orders guarantee the existing workforce's employment until 2010. We have had to turn work away."
Oakwood employs 40 staff, of whom 30 are based at Eccles. The firm has worked on soccer grounds, shopping centres, leisure attractions such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach and the Chill Factor-e near the Trafford Centre, as well as offices and power stations. Turnover for the year to the end of November is likely to be around £3m.
