THE aftershock of the collapse of Hurstwood Construction continues to be felt today with some sub-contractors being forced out of business themselves.

The company, which is part of the Bolton-based Hurstwood Group, blamed cash flow problems with the Howard Town Mill regeneration scheme in Glossop and difficulties arising from the construction of footballer Gary Neville's house for its problems.

Duncan Munro, managing director of Glossop structural engineers Esmanco Engineering, applied for voluntary liquidation last week after Hurstwood Construction did not pay a bill for £102,000.

He said: "In the 34 years since my brother founded Esmanco, we never owed anyone anything and that's why this situation is heart-breaking.

"We've had to let go our six staff as a result of this - and two members of staff had been with the company for 28 years and 21 years," he added.

Graham Bentley, manager of Glossop-based Bentley Cleaning Services, said sub-contractors had been `left in the dark'.

"I'm owed around £3,500 but what annoyed me was the fact that there was no communication between Hurstwood Construction and the sub- contractors," he said

"While there is no risk of my business facing insolvency, it is still an awful lot of money to be left out of pocket."
