A THE main changes, compared with the 2006-07 main return are:
The return now has three components, which are sent to everyone - a shorter `core' return containing the most frequently completed questions; a new additional information page which has some of the less common types of income and tax reliefs, and the less frequently completed questions; and a new insert to encourage people to donate their tax repayment to a charity.
Personal information and any supplementary pages included within the return are now at the front.
There are fewer questions, particularly in the section on interest and dividends.
There are new self- employment supplementary pages. The `short' page has fewer boxes to complete and is for straightforward cases where the annual turnover is less than £64,000. In addition the threshold for completing `three line account' has been increased to £30,000. The 'full' pages are for more complex businesses, or those with higher turnover.
There is a new simpler capital gains summary page, but also a requirement to submit computations with the return.
The tax calculation has become a new supplementary page, which is available on request with its notes.
The share schemes and pension charges supplementary pages have been withdrawn.
There have been extensive changes to the trust etc. page.
New boxes have been added for benefits from pre-owned assets and to identify any income derived from service companies.
Remember also that the deadline for filing the paper main and short tax returns for 2007-08 is October 31, 2008. Tweet
