BOSSES of biotechnology company Cyprotex say that 2008 will be 'crunch time', despite recording improved sales over the past financial year.

The Macclesfield-based business, led by chief executive Robert Morrisson At-water, tests drugs under development by pharmaceutical companies. It posted a pretax loss of £543,102 to the end of last December, compared with £760,811 the previous year.

Turnover rose marginally to £3.63m over the same period from £3.5m.

The firm said that it had performed particularly well following the loss of one of its key clients early in the year.

Chairman Nikolas Sofrontis said that 2008 would be the year in which the company needed to prove its business plan.

"The value of the group's unique technology is clearly recognised through its expanding international customer base," he said.

"This should bear fruit in the coming months. But during 2008, our international customer base - the global drug discovery industry - will confront caution on two fronts.

"These are the challenges of a slowing western economy while also being expected to respond to urgent calls for raised efficiencies and heightened output."

Mr Sofrontis added that the failed attempt by a group led by Cyprotex founder Dr David Leahy to oust the board last year had cost the company around £80,000.
