A CREATIVE approach to design and manufacture is helping a specialist acrylics company break the mould.

Middleton-based Display Designs produces items ranging from napkin holders to cake stands and thrones to bespoke kitchen surfaces.

The company was established 13 years ago by Keith Creed. It employs four people and had sales of £250,000 to the end of December.

Keith designs every piece himself and says the firm caters for budget and bespoke commissions. "A large part of the creative process comes from knowing about the material you are trying to shape," said Keith, 42, who runs the company with his wife, Tracey.

"I have particularly enjoyed working with corian - which is a type of acrylic - in recent years. It is incredibly durable, highly malleable and is also very easy to repair if anything happens to it.

"We have recently been making works surfaces for companies as well as bespoke kitchen counters complete with moulded sinks."

Keith was born in Bristol and trained as a mechanical engineer before moving to Manchester after he met his wife.

Among many more commissions, Display Designs has manufactured table surfaces for the Pizza Hut restaurant chain and has also produced a series of display cases for Halfords.

"Cake decorating supplies is an area in which we specialise as well," said Keith.

"But I hope that in the future we will receive even more commissions from designers to create even more bespoke kitchens and bathrooms."
