CHOCOLATE maker Thorntons said sweet-toothed shoppers had kept sales growth in positive territory amid tougher times on the high street.

The company achieved like-for-like sales growth of 1.2 per cent in the 14 weeks to January 12 across its 378 stores and said results were on course to meet market hopes.

Thorntons, based in Alfreton, Derbyshire, saw a strong performance from the relaunch of its Continental chocolate box selection, with wider varieties, as well as new children's ranges which include chocolate cars.

The company has also invested £1.4m on a store revamp and grown sales at its Thorntons Direct online business.

Chief executive Mike Davies said the retail outlook was `challenging' but added: "We will continue to focus on product innovation, store improvements and customer service."

The company suffered from falling profits in 2006, but said today's figures `maintained its trend of steady improvement' after a shake-up.
