RACECOURSE owner Arena Leisure said its profits hopes were under renewed pressure after heavy rain washed out more races during July.

The group, which owns seven racecourses, said it had been forced to cancel eight fixtures during the month due to wet weather at its Worcester and Windsor tracks.

The blow will make forecasts harder to meet, despite a solid first half performance which saw pre-tax profits up six per cent to £2.3m in the six months to June 30.

Expectations

The company downgraded its expectations in June after flooding left two of its tracks - Worcester and Southwell - under water. It now expects profits of around £6m, compared with previous market estimates of around £7.8m.

Chairman Raymond Mould said: "The weather situation in July was, if anything, worse still. At this stage, the full year market estimate remains an achievable, if now somewhat more difficult, target."

Shares fell four per cent.
