JOHN Shonfeld, the boss of a '7m-turnover uniforms business, said aspects of the Budget 'sounded too good to be true ' and probably are'.

Mr Shonfeld, 59, is founder and chairman of the Tibard Group, of Dukinfield, which manufactures uniforms for chefs and others employed in the hotel and catering industry, and operates a laundry and rental service.

He employs 120 people in the group, which he founded 25 years ago. "My wish-list included announcements on schemes to relieve road congestion, a reduction in corporation tax, bigger capital allowances to encourage investment and a simplification of the tax system.

"But none of these materialised,' he said. 'However, we will benefit from the research and development tax credits, as we are investing between '60,000 and '70,000 a month in R&D and new equipment.

"Also, I welcome the investment in training and measures to encourage apprenticeships and greater skills.' But Mr Shonfeld said he remained dubious about Mr Brown's pledge on red tape.

He said: 'We've heard this all before. There have been promises for a number of years which have never come true. "The burden of regulation and compliance is affecting the competitiveness of UK businesses.

"At Tibard, we spend up to '20,000 a year on compliance measures, plus the cost of administering them."
