Sporting joy

A NEW funding body for grassroots sport - expected to enjoy a popularity boom if London's 2012 Olympic bid is successful - was announced by Gordon Brown.

He pledged '27m for the National Sports Foundation, a public-private partnership to "encourage young sports talent".

The organisation is likely to give grants to sports projects for new facilities, for example, or for education programmes but will not be providing any funds for the Olympic bid.
