A This is a really common situation in sports people and is often the result of a previous injury to the ankle. The ankle ligaments are often damaged and as a result the connection between your brain and your ankle is broken.
The process that tells your brain what position your foot is in works slower. Therefore, when you step on an uneven surface, the muscles that should kick in around the ankle to stabilise it do not activate quickly enough because your brain does not realise quickly enough what is required. Your ankle then gives way and you fall over.
The best way to re-train the brain-ankle connection (aka proprioception) is to use a wobble board. It looks a bit like Saturn - a ball with a ring around it, except it is a flat board sitting on a ball. It essentially provides an unstable surface for you to stand on.
Wobbling around on the Saturn look-alike re-trains and re-establishes `proprioception' in your ankles, which will kick in the brain's ability to activate your ankle stabilising muscles and you will find your ankles stop giving in. You will no longer have any excuse for being a low goal scorer!
