Q I have a three-year-old child who doesn't sleep well at all. He has never slept through the night. I have heard that cranial osteopathy can help with this. Is this true?

A Yes. Cranial osteopathy has consistently and effectively treated sleeping problems in children and babies for many years, even if the child is very old. Whether or not cranial osteopathy will be effective is determined by the cause of the sleep problem. If it is due to an allergy, a bumpy mattress, etc. it won't work. Cranial will be effective if the child had a prolonged or difficult birth, e.g: stage two was longer than 10-15 minutes, forceps were used, if an episiotomy was necessary.

These things all indicate a very slight compression, so the bones of the skull may be inhibiting the central nervous system's ability to `switch off' and relax.

I once treated a 12-year-old boy who had never slept through the night. He had been born by forceps, and also suffered with unexplained headaches. Within three treatments he was sleeping through the night and had no headaches. He has maintained this ever since.

This is a case where the forceps were a direct cause of his symptoms. It is not always such a cut and dry situation as this.

My advice when it comes to deciding whether to try cranial osteopathy for a child who is not sleeping is this: budget time-wise for three treatments (once a week for three weeks).

You will be able to see very clearly within this period whether or not it is the right treatment for your child. Cranial osteopathy can do absolutely no harm to your child, it will only help in so many different ways. All children should receive a cranial check-up within their first year.
