Q I'm worried about the stories about autism in the media. Can you tell me more about it and how I can tell if my son has it?

A It's natural for any mother to be worried about her child's welfare. Autism is a condition that causes children to have difficulties in socialisation, communication and behaviour.

In most cases, the onset is in infancy but it tends to be diagnosed some years later, when problems become more apparent. It is the result of genetic and other factors affecting brain development very early in life.

Some signs to look out for that warrant further evaluation include the following: No babbling by 12 months, no gesturing (waving goodbye, etc) by 12 months, no single words by 16 months, any loss of social or language skills.

There has been much public concern over the MMR vaccine. It is best to equip yourself with as much reliable information as you can. Several large studies, including those published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and Archive of Diseases in Childhood, found no evidence that MMR vaccine is linked to autism.
