Q Can you tell me why my toenails are changing colour?

A Nails' growth and appearance can be altered by chronic skin disease, particularly eczema and psoriasis. But the commonest causes of change in appearance are infections. A single nail turning green can be caused by infection with a stubborn bacteria called pseudomonas.

More usually, multiple nails start to change, maybe with white deposits, then turning yellow and thickening. This is caused by the same fungus as athlete's foot. A sample can be clipped and sent to the lab to see whether fungus is present. It is important to be sure of this as treatment may take six months.

If the far end of the nail is affected only, a medicate lacquer can be applied. If the whole nail is affected, oral antifungal tablets are required.
