A City of wonders - Manchester

Manchester is famous worldwide as a destination for football, which is why The Olympic Football Tournament is coming to Old Trafford between Wednesday 25 July and Saturday 11 August as part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Old Trafford will host nine football matches, including a semi-final in both the men's and women's competitions. Don’t worry if you’re staying in one of the hotels in Manchester outside of the Olympic period though, as there’s still plenty to see at the stadium. Why not take the Old Trafford Cruise and Tour along the canals to Salford Quays, before arriving at Old Trafford to enjoy a tour of the stadium and Manchester United Football Club Museum?

Cheap hotels in Manchester also offer music-lovers a convenient base to explore one of the world’s most famous music scenes. Discover the city that gave the world Oasis, Take That, The Stone Roses, The Smiths and Factory Records’ dance mecca, The Haçienda nightclub, and explore some of the newest music events the city has to offer. You can dance the night away in some of the trendiest clubs in Europe, with Sanky’s, The Mint Lounge and The Factory all hosting local stars alongside world-famous DJs.

If you’re looking for something extra special to wear on your night out, the Manchester Vintage Fashion Market sells one-off retro pieces in Piccadilly Gardens every third Saturday of the month. For those with more fashion-forward tastes, The Trafford Centre – the UK’s largest shopping centre – boasts a wide range of designer and high-street shops, and dining and leisure facilities to suit everyone’s needs. Shopaholics will love Selfridges’ accessories hall, which offers the biggest fashion labels from Stella McCartney to Alexander Wang.

Kids will be kept amused at The Trafford Centre by the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, which features a 4D cinema, a Model Builder’s Workshop, an interactive ride and the LEGO Miniland. Or those with a more daring character could try the indoor skydiving centre, Airkix, located just over the road. Developed by the American military in 1964, the concept of flying indoors in a vertical wind tunnel was pioneered in Tennessee and Las Vegas, before the first SkyVenture tunnel opened in Orlando, Florida in 1998. As only the second SkyVenture tunnel to be manufactured in Europe, Airkik Manchester is a real city highlight. Open to anyone over the age of 4, the experience works by using a wind tunnel to circulate air into a flight chamber. By simply standing in the open doorway and leaning forward, you’ll feel your legs lifted from under from you as you begin your flight adventure!
