City sports a big attraction for banks

Manchester's role as the sporting and entertainment capital of the north has made it a prime target area for wealth managers.

The city's wealth of home-grown rock and pop musicians - and its array of footballing high-fliers - has made the city a magnet for specialist advisers.

This week Coutts, the Queen's bankers, announced it was expanding its Manchester-based team which handles the financial affairs of clients in the world of entertainment.

''Coutts has always had sporting clients, but our dedicated team was formed two years ago as part of our client segmentation strategy,'' explained Paul Richardson, who heads the sport and entertainment client group.

''We have seven private bankers in Manchester and we specialise in offering a tailored approach to meeting the wealth management requirements of high profile people within the sports and entertainment industries.''

The fact that Manchester United director Maurice Watkins is also a local director of Coutts highlights the bank's links with the sporting fraternity. Many of United's players are Coutts' clients.

''Our specially formulated business model is highly successful because it works,'' says Paul Richardson.

''We have seen an increased demand for our solutions from successful people in sports and entertainment in the north and our expansion reflects this.''
