What are the other options? You can chose from three petrol engines and three diesel units starting at é14,725 for the base 1.6litre petrol version, up to é21,510 for this sporty top of the range. There are plans for a 1.4litre TSI petrol engine and a 168bhp diesel engine later this year. All models are available with just five seats, which sort of misses the point with this vehicle.
Who is it for? Anyone who wants to transport lots of people or luggage - but not both at the same time. The Touran is one of the smaller breed of multi purpose vehicles.
Does it do the job? The job I initially asked proved too much - transporting four children and two adults and luggage for three days to North Wales. Even after taking out the middle seat of the back row there simply was just not enough room for all the kit.
What is it like to drive? The leather sports seats are classic VW and the high riding position makes you feel the car is bigger than it actually is. In town it is nimble and easy to manoeuvre and park and it is also surprisingly good fun on more winding routes. We ate up the miles on the motorway with relative ease and it is also incredibly frugal giving around 45mpg.
What else do I need to know? The two rear seats fold into the floor but leg room back there is minimal, comfortable only for the under 10s.
What would make you buy one? A classy solution from VW to the problem of trying to be all things in one car but it has some serious competition, especially from Ford's new S-Max.
