Charlatans' Tim Burgess to front Salford Lads' Club music festival

The Charlatans' Tim Burgess

A major music festival fronted by Charlatans singer Tim Burgess is being held at Salford Lads Club.

The event has been organised by fashion label Topman to help repair damaged caused when the company used the club's image without permission for an advertising campaign last year.

The firm made mock-ups of the club's front changed to read 'Topman Lads Club', claiming its new range harks back to 1980s northern England.

But the promotional pictures for the new Salford-inspired range were actually shot in London.
After a backlash from famous Salfordians, including Hazel Blears MP, the firm have now agreed to start supporting the club.

And for the first event Tim Burgess will showcase top bands and guest DJs at the club, in St Ignatius Walk, on October 20.

Playing 'Topman CTRL Live' will be Factory Floor, Hatcham Social, The Heartbreaks and an exclusive acoustic set from Charlatans band members Tim Burgess and Mark Collins. Tim Burgess and New Order’s Stephen Morris also hit the decks.

All proceeds will go towards keeping the prestigious club running.

Tim Burgess says: "I'm really pleased to have put together and be part of such an inspiring line up.

"It is important that Salford keeps the lads’ Ccub running for another 100 years."

Leslie Holmes, Project Manager, Salford Lads’ Club says: "Wednesday nights at Salford Lads’ Club usually involves the pounding of punch bags and the whack of footballs - But we will gladly hold fire to welcome Tim Burgess and team for a very special evening.  With legendary music photographer Stephen Wright coming along it’s going to be a unique event and we’d like to thank Topman for bringing this all together."

Music fans will also get the chance to recreate the iconic Smiths photo outside the Salford Lads Club – by the same photographer who captured the image.

Acclaimed music photographer Stephen Wright - who famously captured Manchester legends The Smiths outside the club in 1985 - will be back behind the lens.

Tickets, priced at £10, go on sale on October 8 from www.ticketline.co.uk.
