Top of the pops for just £6.40

COCA-COLA launched a website today, offering music albums for download for as little as £6.40.

Singles will cost from just 80p from the site mycokemusic.com

Described as "the first consumer branded, legitimate downloadable music site", it features more than 250,000 new and old tracks.

The company says it will have the largest collection of legal downloads available on the net.

The site will feature exclusive and pre-release tracks from artists including Stereophonics, Kings of Leon, Sugababes and Lemar.

Pre-releases will be for sale on the site up to six weeks before they are available on the High Street.

Music fans will be able to listen to an album through their computer for 1p a track.

Eighties band Tears For Fears, who have reformed after the success of the Gary Jules cover Mad World, will release their new single Closest Thing To Heaven exclusively on the site.

Users have to be aged over 18 because payment is via a credit or debit card.

Supported

The site is supported by the British Phonographic Industry, which aims to crack down on illegal file-sharing.

A spokesman for the drinks giant said: "Coca-Cola is bringing legal downloadable music to a much broader and more mainstream audience than ever before.

"Consumers will be able to access the music they want, in a simple and easy-to-use way."

Over the next year, Coca-Cola is mounting a formidable marketing campaign, including more exclusive tracks and the opportunity to win a bunch of downloads.

The company recently signed a deal to become the official sponsor of the UK charts. But the BBC is dropping mention of Coca-Cola from its Radio 1 chart countdown and Top Of The Pops following criticism by health campaigners.

Will you use the new Coca-Cola service?
