Change - Phats and Small (Multiply Records)

SUPERBLY inconsequential good-time beats from Phats and Small, the Little and Large of the cheesy disco world. And like all good pap pop, it could have been made using out-takes from the duo's breakthrough hit, which used a similar blend of phased harmonies alongside oh so quirky dance beats. The kind of record which makes one again mourn the demise of the Hitman and Her.

Jasmine Hoop - Kathryn Williams (East West)

SOUL searching-ish track from a lady who is receiving her fair share of publicity from East West records. Imagine Suzanne Vega taken up an octave or two and singing songs which aren't quite as poppy, and you have a fair idea of this new Liverpudlian light. Refreshing to hear new talent as it is, this doesn't really take me anywhere new.

I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You - Juliet Turner featuring Bryan Kennedy (East West)

THIS fabulous interpretation of the Tom Waits classic seems somewhat awkward and mildly embarrassing at first. Ironically, that's probably the way it was always intended. Most importantly, it will bring the talents of two already-established Irish people to the ears of people this side of the Irish Sea. It is the unmistakable twang of a slightly off-kilter duet made in heaven.
