Summer Gonna Come Again - Supersister (Gut Records)
THE Spice Girls are officially dead, long live the Spice Girls. The first single from this tough-looking band of ladies was monstrously bad, an unsubtle piece of manufactured pop. It pains me to say, but this time they've hit the mark - albeit with a song which evokes memories of the Spice Girls' best ever song (in my opinion) 2 Become One. That song became a Christmas number one, raising the question of whether this sentimental piece of pop might have been released too early.
Step Inside Your Love - Shed Seven (Artful Records)
I NORMALLY adore Shed Seven for producing throughly depressing records which are still fantastically brilliant to sing along to. It must be something I learned to love as a Smiths fan happily singing along to Girlfriend In A Coma. Now, however, the Sheds have let me down. This is depressing and downbeat, but certainly nothing I'll ever croon to. it just goes to show that they just don't make miserable records like they used to.
Get Up - Beverley Knight (Parlophone)
SUPER-SASSY R'n'B sound from Beverley Knight, currently on tour with Jamiroquai. Although it follows something of a well-worn path, it is just different enough from the usual crop of hard soul sounds to make it exciting. And that's fitting, as the lyrics urge listeners to pretty much Get Up and do their own thing.
