Oasis were named Best Act in the World Today and Noel Gallagher picked up the Classic Songwriter prize.
Brother Liam did not show up and Noel quipped: "He's gone to the zoo. The monkeys are bringing their kids to go and have a look at him."
Receiving his songwriter award, he added: "I guess I really should thank our kid for singing all these great songs - but as he's not here, f*** him."
The ceremony was held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.
Arctic Monkeys kept up the Q Awards tradition of rock star feuds by having a pop at Take That.
The Sheffield band won the People's Choice award and Best Album for Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not.
Collecting the awards, front man Alex Turner blasted the organisers for giving Take That the Q Idol award.
Jokes
"A lot of people make jokes about having awards for no reason just for the sake of having awards, and pretending they were good when they weren't," he said.
"I'm not old enough to know a lot of them but even I know that Take That were bo******."
Other veteran acts picking up awards included A-ha, who got the Q Inspiration award; Jess Lynne, who received the Q Icon award; and Peter Gabriel who won the Q Lifetime Achievement award.Boy George, fresh from his recent community service stint sweeping streets in New York, won the Q Classic Song award for Karma Chameleon.
He told the audience: "I'm so glad to get this award because it means you now recognise me again as a singer and not a road sweeper."
Take That were honoured for their pop comeback after a 10-year absence.
Jason Orange said: "We didn't expect to get back together after 10 years, let alone be at the Q Awards so it's a pleasure to be here.
"We used to do the Smash Hits awards and all that so it's nice to be acknowledged by a credible magazine - not that Smash Hits wasn't credible..."
Stars at the awards included Girls Aloud and Keane, whose lead singer Tom Chaplin recently left rehab.
Music legend Smokey Robinson was honoured for his outstanding contribution to music.
He revealed it was the first award he had ever received in the UK.
Special honour

éTo know I have had some sort of an impact on your lives through music is so special to me.
éI consider myself to be one of the most blessed men that ever lived. If you had asked me the day before I was born to choose what I wanted my life to be, I would have chosen this. This has been my childhood dream.é
Russell Brand presented the Q Groundbreaker award to Primal Scream.
U2 received the Q Award of Awards while The Edge won the Q Innovation in Sound award.
Corinne Bailey Rae was named Best New Act and The Who received the Q Legend award.
Manic Street Preachers picked up the Q Merit award and dedicated it to their late manager Philip Hall and band member Richie Edwards, who disappeared when the group were at the height of their fame.
Singer James Dean Bradfield said of the award: éEverything we ever get feels very bitter-sweet because of the two people indelibly scratched on to our hearts, Philip Hall and Richie James Edwards.éPresenters at the ceremony included the Royle Familyés Ricky Tomlinson, The Sugababes and Jamelia.
