Famed for its edgy style and cooler-than-cool presenters, it has now been brought back to life for a new audience - on Channel 4's internet radio station.
I can reveal that the new presenting line-up is Blur's Alex James, Blue Peter's Konnie Huq and MTV's Emily Rose, taking over in the presenting roles once held by Paula Yates and Jools Holland - and, of course, no project would be complete without Manchester's Anthony Wilson on board as well.
The first 45-minute show was recorded at Salford's Blueprint Studios this week and, rather fittingly, it was two youngsters from Moss Side - rappers Metrodome and Jordan - who performed first.
The radio show, in the tradition of the original Tube, aims to break new bands, as well as showcase exclusive performances from some of the world's best known artists.
With this in mind, the first show, which will air on November 3, includes performances from New Order and interviews with REM, plus new bands like Clinic and Camera Obscura.
Blur bassist Alex James tells me: "I'm fascinated by all aspects of music and making records, which is why I wanted to do this.
Showcasing
"The Tube was always known for showcasing new bands, and that's what we want to continue."
Konnie Huq might be best known for her children's TV role, but she's also a bit of a music aficionado. She said: "I remember Paula Yates and Jools Holland on the show and I loved it. I think I'm going to follow Paula's lead, I'll have to flirt wildly with Tony Wilson."
I'm sure former Factory Records boss Tony will be pleased about that!
The show is being produced by Manchester independent radio company UK One FM, one of the companies bidding for the new FM licence in Manchester.
And The Tube theme tune has a suitably Manchester flavour, recorded by Freebass - the band made up of Manc music legends New Order's Peter Hook, Primal Scream's Mani and ex-Smiths' Andy Rourke. Tweet
