Encore as Dpercussion is saved!

MANCHESTER'S flagship free music festival Dpercussion has been saved.

The annual extravaganza - which was started in 1997 to show the city's defiance following the IRA bomb - was cancelled last month after sponsors pulled funding worth '40,000.

After the M.E.N. reported the cancellation, Ardwick-based fashion firm Bench and Hooch agreed to sponsor the main stage.

Other last-minute support came from community music charity the Factory Foundation, which is providing top acts.

And festival organisers Ear to the Ground will make up the rest of the money by inviting revellers to make an optional '2 donation for this year's show.

Polytechnic

There will be eight stages, 50 bands and 100 DJs from noon on August 5. Bosses are still signing up a clutch of high-profile acts, but bands so far confirmed include up and comers The Whip, The Pipettes and Manchester's Polytechnic.

A spokesman for Ear to the Ground said: "The Manchester Evening News played a big role in saving the festival. The story got people across the city talking and opened the door for Bench to save the day.

"It is massively important for Dpercussion to go ahead this year.

"The event helps keep Manchester's musical heritage alive and this year's will be extra special because it commemorates how far the city has come in the 10 years since the bomb."

Dpercussion takes place in Castlefield on Saturday, August 5 from 12noon. Click here for line-up information. To be a volunteer at Dpercussion e-mail: info@dpercussion.com

FANTASTIC! Well done to the new sponsors Bench and Hooch and Factory Foundation! It would have been a great shame if this event had been cancelled! I'm sure the public will happily donate A#2 each on the day! Looking forward to it! :)

Good news for the festival - and even better for the sponsors as they will have all of that FREE publicity!hmmmmm

Well done Bench! Not sure about the comments about the sponsors getting "free publicity". You'll probably find they've had to pay a handsome some for the pleasure. I suppose if you don't like the idea you could always stay at home.
