End of year music poll

IT's been a fantastic year for the local music scene, with plenty of familiar faces making triumphant returns, while scores of exciting new acts have grabbed a share of the limelight.

But what has been your favourite album and single released by Manchester artists this year? Make sure your opinion is counted by voting in ManchesterOnline's end of year music poll.

The poll was first launched last year and proved a phenomenal success, with thousands of users voting for their favourite records. In the end, Simply Red's Home romped to victory in the albums poll, while former Take That star Mark Owen took first place in the singles category.

This year, big names like Morrissey, The Charlatans, Ian Brown, Tim Booth, The Fall, The Verve, Lisa Stansfield and Elbow have all released acclaimed new material which should put them among the favourites to scoop an award.

Chart stars like Mark Owen, VS and OMC should also be among the front runners, while brand new acts such as The Earlies, Nine Black Alps and The Longcut may also fare well.

But that's enough speculation - the final decision is down to you. And as a thank you for taking part, two voters will be chosen at random to receive '30 music vouchers from music store Fopp.

The polls close at midnight on New Years Eve so click on the links below to cast your vote now.

I voted Mark Owen's MAKIN'OUT cos Mark cos that song is great!!! Mark is very talented and I wish his music was given the attention it deserves. I think he proved to be a great artist with that fantastic "FOUR MINUTE WARNING" new-start... so, Mark's stuff is a cluster of feelings and emotions... fantastic singer, new sound... cool stuff!!!

He left a MARK!!!

My vote goes to Loose Canon for Manchester Online single of the year.

'What Comes Next' is a quality, infectious, gritty, snarling, belter of a tune... 2005 looks rosy for these lads and their Akoustik Anarkhy believers!

I think my vote goes to 'Give Hobbs a Chance', or 'AC' by the Longcut. Well, I suppose I'll go for 'Give Hobbs a Chance' because its got more words in it.

"Killing a Girl" is the first song I found from Hilton's album "Not Afraid To Be Happy" and it is my favourite number one. My first impression was the captivating music, the beautiful words, like in "wine coloured days as sweet as the sun, I freeze at your beauty to come". But it is also a meaningful song.

Nine Black Alps "Cosmopolitan" has to be the best debut single to come out of Manchester since Supersonic. Expect big things from these nice Manchester boys next year. Roll on Nu-Manchester.

politburo-'velocity' is fantastic, super angry intense joy division spawn-the band are great because the lead singer, nick, doesnotcome close to a rock star and they will never be famous even through they are the one of the best out there

I went to see Tim Booth at Glastonbury hoping for some 'James' classics and was pleasantly chuffed with his new tingle enducing material! 'Bone' is funky, sexy and Tim's voice is still beautiful... Tim and his band are great live (as anyone who has seen him at Move or any other festival this year would agree) and his enthusiastic seizure like dancing puts a smile on your face and a dance in your step! : )

It's gotta be a toss up between The Longcut's "Transition" & "Cosmopolitan" by Nine Black Alps for Manc single of 2004. I think "Transition" probably just shades it. I can stick that on any time of the day or night & still feel like pogoing around the living room like a lunatic. Loose Canon's "What Comes Next?" is also absolutely top, but i would say that because i'm in the band. If Jim Hobbs had stuck a single out in 2004 it would have won hands down. Maybe next year, eh?

just a qucky to say that i voted for the makin' out single by the lovely mark owen, bless him, he works so hard, and get's no credit for it. the last album i bought also was mark's in your own time album, give the guy a break man, he's a fabulous song writer and a fabulous singer, well and of course not forgetting that he's a fabulous person too. we need more stuff from him, there's too many pop idle clowns in the charts...and too much of the same old boring stuff, too much robbie, kylie and same old boring stuff from the same old boring people.......roll mark's new single and album, iv'e not bought nothing in the music stuff for ages.......charts are rubbish........hope his next single and album are a hit........something to look farward to.
well roll on.............
