FROM the name Bedlam you might expect Manchester's latest bar to be a tad chaotic, disturbed even. That was the name, after all, of the old London insane asylum. But don't be afraid - you'd be mad to miss out on it! The former Jar Bar site has been transformed into a minimalist haven for urbanites seeking mental soothing. Sip on cocktails called Mind Bender or Straitjacket while contemplating the outside world through huge windows.
The original glass frontage remains as does the two tier layout, but the stark design and use of glass panelling inside as well as out, add a dash of class to Bedlam that was sadly lacking with it's predecessors.
Out of all the establishments along Peter Street this is by far the most stylish - which should give the overpriced Opus One opposite something to think about.
Bedlam is a pared down relaxation experience. The monotone theme downstairs with padded walls and couches along one half, and granite floor and black couches at street level give Bedlam an austere atmosphere. This is substantially warmed by the DJ roster, dosing out funky house to the audience five days a week, including Jenny Harrison (Key 103, Miss Moneypenny's) and Dave Ellis (Emporia).
Upstairs is the VIP zone, decked out like a psychiatrist's office, successful in parts but I couldn't help thinking of the comparison between the Ligne Roset furniture showroom; beautiful lines, but a little devoid of humour.
Alongside the Bedlam brand on the glass exterior is the S&M logo, not a kinky treat, but an exclusive sausage and mash menu that somehow escapes the Bedlam theme. How mad is that?
