This was la dolce vita Manchester-style, and the Latin vibe continued as the staff at Oca gave us a warm welcome, took our coats and showed us to the table.
We marvelled at the attention to detail, from the spotless glass screens, top-spec sound system and white linen napkins to the sparkling glassware, stylish silverware and artistic floral arrangements (dogwood in a pink oasis ... nice).
There were five tables beside the window and the circular floor design meant there was not a bad seat in the house.
We chose a platter of mixed Italian meats, fish and olives, which were all freshly prepared, although we were tempted by the vast choice of pastas and pizzas (the Big Breakfast variety sounded fun and tasty).
It was a fabulous start, but the main aubergine dish which followed had not been grilled enough before being covered with cheese sauce, and when I pointed this out to the staff they immediately offered complimentary desserts and coffee. Six days later a letter of apology and an invitation for two complimentary meals arrived.
The dessert of tiramisu was a generous portion and not too chilled. Refreshingly there was a choice of six varieties of wine by the glass.
As well as the excellent food, the success of this restaurant is down to the owner, who makes everyone's dining experience a personal one.
I cannot wait for the spring to sit outside and sip an espresso and gaze at the passing barges - or will that be gondolas?
