CITY Life has come over all of a quiver at the prospect of Valentine's Day or, more accurately, Valentine's night: the one evening in the year when romantic gestures don't (necessarily) get met with standard Manc cynicism, ridicule take or put down.

Or, if you don't mind forfetting the fire, there's the great service and whisky-laden back bar of the Briton's Protection to call on: the intimate location of many a heart-to-heart.

If you're looking for something a little more Lost in Translation for your liaison - all city views, smooth service and sexual subtext - the obvious choice is Cloud 23.

But if this corporate chav-magnet turns you off rather than on may we recommend you try The Modern (pictured) at Urbis instead.

You'll get the glam sightlines and great drinks in a space with more inherent personality than the entire Hilton estate.

When he wanted to win over prospective amour Veronica Corningstone, he took her to the local jazz joint, ordered three fingers of Glenlivet and some cheese, serenaded her with a little jazz flute, and let the journey to pleasuretown begin.
