IT was rock 'n' roll time at the
Cornerhouse
last night, for the city's premiere of Control, the new movie about the life and untimely death of Joy Division frontman
Ian Curtis.
But it seems the occasion didn't persuade the remaining members of the band, now New Order, to kiss and make up.
Although
Peter Hook and
Stephen Morris came out to support the film, there was no sign of singer
Bernard Sumner.
Drummer Stephen admitted it was an emotional experience to watch the movie: "The film is excellent, but I suppose it's just a bit draining for those of us who had been a part of it all."
The movie has been winning rave reviews ever since it won top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Bassist
Peter Hook
says: "It amazes me, the power of music. Sometimes it amazes me how knowledgeable young people are about Joy Division.
"And I feel sorry for all these young bands coming through because none of them seem to be able to knock Joy Division off our pedestal."

The musical performances are staggering, you are left in no doubt about the power and intensity of Joy Division's music. Although the musical side of the film is incidental to the human story; it is thankfully not a straightforward Rock biopic.
r.i.p.ian curtis, from a very tender age i had the cover of closer over my bed.looking back i must have looked like a very intense young man as i watched them on granada t.v. an the age of 11.but they moved me ,and very much still do, class is timeless.listen members of new order sort it out,i watched you at manchester against cancer at the m.e.n. and you only did joy division songs, thanks for that,i hope no one saw me cry ,as im 40 now ! cheers
Went to see the film at the weekend and marvelled at the likeness of Ian Curtis, played by Sam Riley. After reading Touching from a Distance years ago and struggling to put it down, I wasn't disappointed at all. Great performance by Samantha Morton aswell. Spellbinding stuff.
