Michael Moore @ Manchester Apollo

12/11/03

IN this age of political apathy, the fact a sell-out crowd turned up to see Michael Moore's one-man show is remarkable.

The author, film-maker, and Left Wing commentator has tapped into the psyche of millions of people and proved you can still be passionate about politics, and popular.

Whatever you think about his ideology, you have to admire that.

His show is part political lecture, part comedy show and part self-help group.

He began with a rather predictable American in olde England routine, with most of the jokes about Prince Charles.

But he soon moved on to make his anti-war case, and here he was at his most compelling.

He read names of the 53 British soldiers killed in Iraq. It was emotive and powerful and effectively conveyed the true meaning of combat. He then moved on to a stilted question and answer session.

But, overall, it was hard not to be won over by Moore's charm and enthusiasm, if not all his arguments.

Michael Moore is an average guy,
and his show reflected this. He was not particularly articulate and pandered to crowd in his infantile mocking of some of his audience who asked questions. One particularly excrutiating moment was when he tried to apologise for not knowing enough about Chechnya right after mocking someone's pronunciation of that country's name.
The Q&A session was tiresome, and his answers at times were vague. The situation wasn't helped by elements in the audience who seemed to believe they were the stars of the show. Some of the questions were so long it was embarrassing.
At one stage a questioner gave a pro-war stance, and I thought this would be the moment where Moore would finally raise his game. But instead he got himself bogged down in his own incredulity at this question being asked.

I came to the show generally interested in what Moore had to say, but left wondering why I hadn't taken the B#25 the touts were offering for my ticket.

Michael Moore is nothing more than a self loathing, pile of negativity. He also comes off as feeling guilty about his status in life. That is sad, but I don't feel sorry for him.
