PAPIER-MACHE headed comedian Frank Sidebottom is ready to storm back into the limelight - and he'll start this week with his own art exhibition at the prestigious Tate Britain gallery in London.

Timperley comedy star Frank is known for his surreal brand of humour, but is also a talented artist.

And I hear that as well as an array of his works going on display at the exhibition, a new interactive mosaic by Manchester artist Mark Kennedy celebrating Frank and other regional celebs will be revealed.

The mosaic will include images of Frank, Caroline Aherne's comic creation Mrs Merton, Warrington TV and radio star Chris Evans and investigative journalist Jon Ronson among others.

It is the intention that the mosaic will be brought back to Manchester to go on permanent display in the city centre and will feature special buttons to press that will play comedy clips recorded by Frank - which will make it the world's first animated mosaic.

Meanwhile, at the event on Friday night, Frank will also be premiering his animated TV show with his puppet, Little Frank, as well as performing a few musical numbers with his trusty Casio keyboard.

All sorts

"I'm up to all sorts," he tells me.

"I'm getting ready for my own exhibition at the Tate in London and I'll be showing off the animated TV series I've been working on.

"We've been filming it in a secret base in Manchester.

"I'll also be launching my new LP at the Tate, and the front cover is a picture of the mosaic that Mark Kennedy has done of all of us Manchester showbiz people.

"And before all that, I've got to do some shopping for my mum," he chirps in his usual offbeat style.

"When I'll get to tidy my bedroom I don't know."

Frank, pictured doing a bit of brushwork at the opening of new Northern Quarter gallery, Bambers Art Space, tells me there's nothing he can't turn his hand to.

"Performing, singing, opening shops, being a car park attendant - the list is endless," he says.
