Kids with the art world at their feet

THE ages ranged from five to 92 - and they were united by a desire to brighten up their neighbourhood.

More than 350 people from Wythenshawe have helped the Chrysalis Arts company to add a splash of colour and community to the £20m redevelopment scheme at the new Forum centre.

The centrepiece of their art project is a 25m square mosaic featuring images ranging from Tudor cottages to Concorde in the Forum concourse.

Other pieces in the display include three decorated steel and glass spirals designed in community workshops, 16 fabric panels, pebble and ceramic mosaic paving, two spinning emblems and more than 30 banners.

Chrysalis Arts brought 15 schools and community groups together with artists including Lauren Sagar, Tracey Cartledge and Taina Rahkola to help turn ideas into reality.

Chrysalis also collaborated with the architects and building firms involved in the refurbishment of the centre to fully integrate the artwork into the design of new building.

Chrysalis Arts' Kate Maddison said: "This project has shown what it is possible to achieve when people work together."

The Forum project is being overseen by Wythenshawe Partnership - the city council-appointed regeneration team.
