Wigan Town Hall, MARCH 29

Leigh Turnpike Centre, APRIL 3

A BBC anchorman and a much loved northern author will be among the heavyweights at this year's Leigh And Wigan Words Together Literary Festival.

George Alagiah - the face of the Six O'Clock News - and Wigan-born broadcaster Stuart Maconie will headline the 12-day event, which runs from Monday, alongside the likes of Vincent Smith, Chris Tutton, Jim Eldridge and the Manchester Vampire Queen and poet Rosie Lugosi.

George will be talking about his autobiography (and his critical views on the UK's relationship with immigration), A Home From Home, at Wigan Town Hall on March 29 (tickets £10).

Stuart, the author of Pies And Prejudice, reopens the topic of his BBC4 programme Pop On Trial and invites his audience on April 3 at Leigh's Turnpike Centre (free, reservations only) to join in the debate about music's proudest decade.

It is Stuart's third appearance at the festival, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. "I love coming home and I enjoy the chance to chat personally with the kind of people who have shaped my outlook on cultural life in the north," said Stuart.

"We always have fun and this year will be no different."
