THE news that fines for fare-dodgers on Greater Manchester trams are rocketing by up to 900 per cent became one of the most debated talking points on this website this week.

From next month, anyone caught without a valid ticket will be hit with a standard penalty of £100.

At the moment, the fine for a first offence is just £10 for those willing to pay on-the-spot. Transport chiefs said the crackdown - which starts on May 11 - was intended to send a strong message to cheats: buy a ticket or face the consequences.

a police officer has many responsibilities in his contact with the people that he has sworn to serve and protect.A vehicle is a piece of equipment that he can use to carry out his duties.The article appears to have already judged him/her "guilty" without being aware of the full circumstances as to the reasons why the officer parked his vehicle in the said location. The officer,if he/she had been answering a call for help,of any nature,then this would quite possibly made it necessary to park his vehicle in a safe place in order to contact the person who had made the call for assistance. This being so then was the officer supposed to tuck the car under his arm whilst contacting the caller? I would hardly think so.The British Bobby is the best in the world and the public of Greater Manchester are lucky to have the best in England.So if the officer was 'going about his business' then he has adapted the correct attitude in ensuring the safety of his vehicle and also to ensure that the vehcle does not cause an unnecessary obstruction to any other road user.I submit that on the details as given then no-one can make a proper decision. Let all the facts be given in full and the let us make up our minds,

My prayers go out to all alcoholics. Alcohol has been one of biggest curses that has aflicted man. Lives have been destroyed. Families brought to their knees. With all the money in the world you will never see a happy Alcoholic. The only answer lies with Jesus. what about the people claiming allowances to look after the
alcholics, that should double the figures. Not pleasant reading
When I am not allowed any benefits by the faceless wonders
Who assess you from a desk in an office block
even though I suffer from angina, arthritis. and diabetes.

Zeeto, unless your conditions impact on the way you live your life you will not qualify for DLA. Just having a condition is not in itself a qualification for benefits.
A chat with your local CAB may be useful.

Are they alcoholics because they are disabled or are they disabled because they are alcoholics? - if it's the latter then they should not get benefits, if it's the former they have my sympathy.

This is not a simple one. Any one of us who has ever had a few drinks could have ended up as an alcholic. It's not something that people choose to be.

Crack cocaine and heroin addiction is a choice. I would oppose funding that.

I think it is important when anyone is wronged that someome should be punished (wronged). That way, it will bring an end to the situation. Right?

You say that the answer to everything lies with God and Jesus... it doesn't. You cant prove that God and Jesus exists and I cant prove that God and Jesus dont exist but I think most people will agree with the opinion that they dont exist. Alcoholics don't need God or Jesus they need real help and support from people who really do exist like Alcoholics Annon and Local Authority Drugs and Alcohol Support Teams. If God and Jesus really are the answer there wouldn't be any suffering in the world. God, Jesus and the Church are a brand... just like any other business.
