Fearless mum Elle Hynd made her community swell with pride when she chased a suspected robber and held on to him for almost 10 minutes as he kicked and punched her in a bid to get away.

Elle, 38, is the first nominee in our Manchester Heroes Awards .

She pursued the teenage thug after he allegedly snatched Teresa Clark's bag outside her home in Cheadle, Stockport, last week and then jumped on a bus.

Pint-sized artist Elle jumped in her car and followed the single-deck bus until it pulled up at the next stop, when the mother-of-one raced on board and overcame the 6ft, 16-year-old boy in a frenzied tussle. She detained him until help arrived.

Teresa, 52, whose stolen purse triggered the courageous act, said: "That someone I don't even know would risk her own safety for me leaves me struggling for words. She really is my hero.

"It gives people hope that we are fighting crime in our communities and sends out a message loud and clear to criminals - don't come back here.

"The negativity we hear grinds us all down. Let's hear about wonderful people for a change."

The Manchester Heroes Awards have been launched to celebrate everyday people who achieve extraordinary things and reward them with £1,000 each for their efforts.

Barclays director for distribution services Erin Biertzer said the bank is delighted to sponsor the awards.

She said: "When researching which city would be suitable for the first of our new concept branches in the UK we were struck by the achievements of Manchester and its people.

"A history of firsts as diverse as splitting the atom, inventing public transport and creating the modern computer are things that any city in the world would be proud of.

"Whilst these events were one-offs, every day someone in Manchester does something that changes lives. That's why we want to celebrate the launch of our new branch by finding the 25 heroes who put Manchester first every day."

To nominate a hero email: hero@men-news.co.uk , or write to Manchester Heroes Awards, Manchester Evening News, 1 Scott Place, Manchester, M3 3RN.
