Trafford Council’s assertions that it is tackling school run pollution and encouraging alternative modes of transport for school children are half-baked and lacking logic.
What is the point of training young people to become safer cyclists when the Conservative-led Trafford Council refuses to support the TiF transport proposals to reduce congestion?
Trafford’s cycle network is appalling, with few safe routes for young people to cycle to school.
However, rather than accept the opportunity for investment into a new system of cycle paths which will allow more children to cycle to school safely, they insist on opposing the congestion charge scheme. This means that parents will be still reluctant to let their children ride to school, thus undermining plans to get more cars on the school run off the road.
Moreover, Trafford has chosen to invest in £24 million in road improvements whilst cutting back on public transport expenditure or developing the borough’s cycle path network.
The lack of joined-up thinking on this issue reflects the paucity of cohesive policies on the environment and transport promoted by Trafford Council.
