I WAS very interested to read in this newspaper of the Priory ward Labour councillors’ campaign to save Sale Moor Post Office.
I must agree with them that this post office is a vital community facility, and a lifeline for local businesses and residents.
It would be grossly unfair to make local people, especially pensioners, trek all the way into Sale precinct simply for postal, pension and benefit services.
However I find it ironic that Cllr Jane Baugh seems to have made herself the spokesman for this worthy campaign, when it is her colleagues in the Labour Government who are themselves driving these post office closures.
A further 2,500 post offices are to be closed by 2009, and 4,000 have already closed since 1997 (such as the one on Marsland Road).
Perhaps instead of preaching to the converted (i.e. readers of this newspaper) of the value of our sub-post offices, she might start convincing those in her own party who are determined to withdraw government support and funding from them until they become unviable.
