That's the viewpoint put forward by Blues defender Joleon Lescott as the battle for places hots up following the injury that has put David Beckham out of the tournament.
Lescott reckons the 22-year-old is from the same mould of young English talent which has produced Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott.
Johnson's cameo performance and brilliant equaliser at Sunderland proved to have been as perfectly timed as it was executed with news arriving within hours that Beckham was out of the reckoning for South Africa.
With Aaron Lennon struggling with an injury, Walcott trying to find form and Johnson, an £8m buy in the January transfer window, surely moving ahead of Shaun Wright-Phillips in the City pecking order, the seat on the plane may yet have Johnson's name on it.
Lescott feels that people are overlooking the fact that Johnson is actually a left-sided, left-footed player.
Roberto Mancini has preferred to play Johnson on the right - a preference which was justified as he cut inside onto his left foot before curling a precise shot into the top corner.
But for years England have been crying out for a natural left-sided midfielder and Lescott feels that Johnson fits the bill.
Johnson himself has modestly described this summer's tournament as coming too soon for him but Lescott feels he is doing himself down.
"Hopefully, he will be in the England squad with me in the near future," said the big Blues defender. "If he keeps producing that kind of form, why not?
Johnson potential
"Everyone knows how good a player he can be, and he has shown that potential on a consistent basis for us.
"I don't see it as too late for him to get into the England squad for the World Cup. If he's doing it on a regular basis for City, he could make it.
"He might see it differently, but at the moment there is an opportunity for someone to play on the left wing for England and for me he is as good as anyone in the Premier League.
Johnson built a reputation for himself at Middlesbrough as a goalscoring winger, but Lescott feels he has plenty of attributes.
"He takes the ball under pressure and is the kind of a player who can make things happen, like Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips," he said.
"We are blessed with the wide players we have in the City squad.
"I would definitely put him in the same ability bracket as other young players who have come through like Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney, but he has to believe in himself and continue to do what he has been doing."
Johnson arrived as a £8.5m buy in the January transfer window and admits he was a little star-struck on his first day, gazing around the dressing room at the likes of Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor.
But Lescott says he slotted into the group immediately, adding: "He settled in straight away, as I did. The boys have been great and made him feel welcome, and no-one has been the least bit surprised at what he is doing on the pitch because we knew what type of player he is.
"He is another person to come off the bench or to start a game, and he can make a difference. We know at any given time we can change wingers, and change personnel."
Where should Johnson play for City? Have your say.

This new planet does not revolve around the sun like all the other planets it revolves around the stars Beckham and Rooney in the middle a minor constellation called Rag and in a sort of figure of 8 pattern, christened favouritism.
In addition a blue shooting star seen last Sunday by all those in the Stadium of Light in Sunderland is being ignored and put down to just another phase of the Blue Moon.
By the way just in case you haven’t caught it yet star Beckham will not be visible in the SKY during the world Cup in Africa although star Rooney will be shining on SSN if not on the pitch.
Should never have watched KPAX the other evening!

I came out of the gym yesterday and got into a bit of banter with 2 Spurs fans (I do live in essex) and they seem to think its a bigger achievment for them to finish fourth than ciddy.
Despite my eloquent attempts to explain that Spuds had spent just as much as us over the past ten years (remember them days, a new signing would be a free transfer or a new contract offer to an existing player). Other fans seem to forget that there is a city price and their price, look at lescott if sour spuds bought him, the price would be £13 - 15 million so we have to pay 30% more than normal to get the same quality!!
Apart from debt laden neighbours and pompey the press don't look at the losses other teams have such as Aston Villa (their owner had to suffer a 30 odd mill lost) sunderland (still spending way above their comfort zone) just to name a few.
Sorry for sounding off but i am fed up with jealous, uneducated malicious fans of other teams moaning about us, more so when its the spuds!!

Waste of time arguing with loudmouth, cocky spuds fans-they''ve always been as arrogant and brash about their club as the average rag-just without the cups.

I think Jonno deserves his own chant, something unique, rather than the monotenous and boring -
"There's only one Adam Johnson" type chants, so often sang to so many other players.
I know we have quite a few posters who are Joy Division fans so how about this chant.
To the chorus ofTransmission - " Dance dance dance down the wing jonno" [repeat to fade]
Simple but effective i think.

I'm all for some Joy Division based chants though. Does anybody know if Boro fans picked up the Ian Curtis resemblance too? (Yes, I know, that's assuming quite a lot for Boro fans).

He just needs to concentrate on getting us that fourth place by sticking to Mancini's script not looking to grab a few headlines
On Sunday, till Johnson came on, all the forwards seem to be trying to impress as individuals rather than doing the team thing - and it cost us
Adam seems like a super lad - let him do his best for the team. If that proves to be spectacular, that could give him an opening for an international career earlier rather than later, and could be a late surprise for SA but in the meantime concentrate on City Adam - true talent will find a way to prosper
