EXCLUSIVE
SIR NICHOLAS Winterton's latest views on British Muslims have been branded "offensive and divisive" by the region's racial equality council.
But the unrepentant Macclesfield MP this week stood by comments made in his latest article in the Macclesfield Express, published in full in today's edition.
In it, Sir Nick blames multi-culturalism for the terrorist threat facing the country and says that "agitating so-called Muslim community leaders" who criticise the police "should be ashamed of themselves and held to account".
He also adds: "The Australian Government has spelt out bluntly what it expects of its ethnic minority communities and we in the UK should do the same.
"They should stop politicising dress, such as wearing the hijab and burkha, they should learn English, they should not return to their homelands to get a spouse, cease forced marriages and accept once and for all that the United Kingdom is not, and never will be, an Islamic state."
His views come just two days before the first anniversary of the July 7 London bombings and the right-wing Tory MP suggests the "outrageous outcry" in response to last month's raid in East London, where police found no evidence of a terrorist plot, shows that the British public have already forgotten about the atrocities of one year ago.
The Conservative Party Central Office has distanced itself from the comments, releasing a statement saying: "These are Sir Nick's personal views".
But they are sure to embarrass Tory leader David Cameron who is aiming to make the party more appealing to the ethnic communities.
Director of the Cheshire, Halton and Warrington Racial Equality Council, Shantele Janes, said she would raise her concerns over the article with Mr Cameron.
"We are extremely concerned by the article," she says.
"We think that it is offensive and divisive and we are appalled that someone in his position would be so irresponsible as to make the comments he did, contributing to the climate of hostility towards Muslims in the UK."
But Sir Nick insisted such comments represent the views of both his constituents and the wider public.
"They are forthright and positive and express the views of many of those people who have communicated to me and speak to me about these issues," he said.
"It is time straight talking took place on the sensitive issue of integration and asylum. It is right that people should be told what the majority of British people believe.
"I'm advised there are 70 suspected terror plots to attack Britain that are being investigated and the threat has not diminished almost a year on from the bombings in London which resulted in 56 innocent people losing their lives.
"I would prefer the police to raid a house and, ultimately, for the people who were arrested to be released than for people to be allowed to develop terrorist plots.
"We have experienced terrorism in this country from the IRA and I took just as strong a line in respect of IRA terrorism.
"But if people come to this country they should seek to integrate into the country and to accept our laws and our traditions."
While many countries may look on with envy at Britain's multiculturalism, Sir Nick feels it is that diversity which has fuelled the terrorist threat.
"I do not believe multiculturalism is a good thing, and the chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality has said the same thing. What we want is to have integration into our society. Unfortunately, many of those within the Muslim world are not prepared to integrate.
"One is not against people coming to this country who are coming here to protect themselves because their lives would be in danger in the country of their origin, but they should show due gratitude and respect for that."

Most Muslims live and contribute a great deal to this country.
This man is living of the state in a cushy job and preaching hate and rubbish.
His party sent voting cards to Brits abroad, why? Shouldn't they integrate?
Did the British integrate when it had an empire, no it imposed.
I bet the man has never tried to interract with Muslims. He needs to join his natural home in the BNP

If I moved to another country I would expect to integrate with the locals, not segrigate and distance myself. As far as his comments being 'divisive', I think the attitude of some immgrants is exactly that from the minute they set foot in this country.

He is a disgrace.
Europeans have always imposed their will and culture on people. They have decided what is right and wrong despite what everyone says.
Why is it if a nun wears a habit she is devoted to god and a Muslim women who covers is oppressed. What a double standard.
The man is populist. How about he gets a proper job.
An utter disgrace. He wouldn't dare say this about any other race who faithfully cling to their culture. Dare he question Othodox Jews - never.
The man is a disgrace to the Conservative Party and the constituenccy he represents. What he represents is everything that is bad about narrow minded people.
Has he ever tried to talk to Muslims - I doubt it. Just a right-wing newspaper reader gushig out the usual cliches.

They are opposed to assimilation.
"Qaradawi asserted that Muslims should be "upright without being inclusive and they should work for integration but not assimilation.""

Winterton , a politician, said Muslims should stop politicisng dress by wearing hijabs/burkha which are religious dresses!!.
" they should learn English,"
find me a second or third generation Muslim born in this country who doesnt speak English and Ill give you a A#1million!!
" they should not return to their homelands to get a spouse,"
What a revealing racist comment- "return to their homelands" - "their" (meaning your fellow British citizens who follow the Muslim religion) homelands are Britain!! As far as Im aware Britain is a free country and British citizens are free to marry whom they want
-dont think Nick would complain if a white english person married someone from Russia or Thailand - so why the double standards? why one rule for British Muslims and another for British non-Muslims?
" cease forced marriages"
as if forced marriages were the norm or theywere permitted by Islam
what a clueless joker
and
"accept once and for all that the United Kingdom is not, and never will be, an Islamic state."
this is where extereme paranoia seeps in - no sane person thinks Britain is an Islamic state- Britain is however a free country where people are and should be allowed to practice their religion and dress how they want. Is being a practicing Muslim tantamount to believing Britain is an Islamic state? then does that mean being a practicing Christian in Muslim lands is tantamount to believeing they are Christian states?

He is just a fading politician trying to get some headlines to prove he may do a little something.
It is easy to blame one group of people as the press do to sell papers.
Most people get on with their lives be they white, Mulsim, black etc.
Nicky wouldn't dare say this about White people finding jobs! Yet on Northern Housing estates many don't work. But Nicky doesn't care.
The worst form of prejudice is targeting that which you don't understand

I recently watched a debate on TV where the muslim council of great britain wanted to live by their laws in this country??????????
If they don't like that laws of the country and they prefer the laws elsewhere - GET OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND GO TO WHERE THE LAWS ARE THAT YOU WANT TO LIVE BY!!!!!
Keep fighting Sir Nick we are all behind you.

Multiculturalism is not working as there are no expectations for people who move to the UK to integrate. Insteed what one sees is the promotion of different cultures being impossed on the British which in my view is very unffair. It;s also bloody stupid and simplistic to call racist and fascist to anyone who wants to start a debate on immigration and islam by doing so it only makes more angry and resentful.

On the other hand whilst Mr Winterton is fully accountable, both to his constituants and Parliament, can I ask on what basis Ms Janes the director of the REC uses the term 'We' in damning Mr Wintertons comments? If she means that these are her personal views then let her say so, but is this not the very same person whose wholly ill considered blinkered intervention in outright support of Traveller tresspass rights in Middlewich, had a similar effect on promoting local community relations as Attilla the Hun for tourism?
Nationally, Trevor Phillips has introduced a much needed common sense approach to cultural issues that are logical, balanced and pragmatic and which I feel are welcomed by the overwhelming majority of the British community. What a pity that his aims, aspirations and personal aptitude appear to be neither recognised nor practiced by Ms Janes!

"Not returning to their homeland to get a spouse" would be only be enforceable if all UK citizens were stopped from marrying non-UK citizens.
"United Kingdom is not, and never will be, an Islamic state" This is a bit of a "straw man" argument as only a very tiny minority of the UK muslim population which itself is only 3.1% of the UK's population are actually advocating it.
I think he has also been proved wrong with his "the British public have already forgotten about the atrocities of one year ago" with the commemorations and silences held last Friday.
Luckily for Sir Nick the Muslim population of his, consistuency only numbers 252 out of the total population of 90,109 or 0.28% according to the 1991 census so he won't have upset too many of his constituents directly targetted with his article.

Britain is not an Islamic state, and never will be. This country is a democracy - and those very unhappy Muslims in the UK who wish to live under Islamic law are completely free to race (please do!) to the nearest airport and fly to the oppresive Islamic state of their choice.
Regarding Holly's message about ex-pat Brits not assimilating with the local population - I have no doubt this is true in many cases. However, when was the last time you heard of British ex-pats whose beliefs and ideals were so at odds with those of their chosen host country that they decided to become suicide bombers and kill innocent people on their way to work?
