The future of film in Macclesfield has been saved with new digital equipment at the town’s only cinema.
Cinemac has operated at The Heritage Centre for six years and its owner Steven Metcalf says audiences have been rising steadily.
He has been using 35mm film, but with time running out for this old format Mr Metcalf had to look for another way to save the town’s cinema.
Cinemac has spent more than £40,000 on new digital equipment which promises a clearer picture and better sound.
Steven says the new kit is going down a storm.
He said: "I’m thrilled. I expected the digital change-over to provide better sound and picture but this is an astronomical improvement.
"Our regulars have said they can hear every word and one gentleman said he no longer needed to use the induction loop on his hearing aid.
"Another got out of his seat after a couple of minutes to come over and say how much better the picture had become.
"You’re plunged right into the action."
The films are now shown using a computer hard drive which is loaded into the projector.
Mr Metcalf said: "Traditional film reel will be phased out in a couple of years and film companies are already cutting back on 35mm prints.
"People don’t want to lose a cinema in Macclesfield and this investment in new technology is a step towards further developments such as being able to screen live opera, theatre and sport.
"It’s great to put back in some of the money we have generated.
"Cinemac has established itself as an affordable venue for the latest films and now we can be certain to continue showing the latest blockbusters right in the heart of Macclesfield."
Admission prices have stayed the same and a quarter of profits go to the Heritage Centre. Visit www.cinemac.org.uk .

i could not think of anything more worse than to sit in an old damp ran down building for a period of time
Great news. It's always good to see a community run project doing well enough to afford such an upgrade.
I have been a fair few times and the only thing that put me off going more often was the sound quality - sometimes you couldn't hear the films dialogue. With the new improved system in place I will happily make more journeys down - especially as the excellent prices are staying low - practically half the price of all other cinemas Thanks to all involved!
Visited last week and really impressed with the screen. Very much worth a visit and very competitive prices as well.
A geat little cinema and a credit to the town.
Well done to all who work there.
