TRIBUTES have flooded in from Macc Town fans - who say Keith Alexander's undeniable charisma kept him popular even when his decisions divided opinion.
John Rayner, chairman of the Silkmen Supporters Trust, the offical fan club, said: "It's absolutely tragic.
"Keith was a gentleman and extremely popular with the fans.
"He had had illnesses in the past but he seemed to have got over it.
"I know he had been ill but he had convinced everyone he was okay."
A condolence board has been set up on the fansite and John said they would begin to think of a fitting fan tribute.
Matt Beresford, a supporter for ten years and webmaster for the unofficial fans website, Wraggs to Riches, said: "It was a shock for us.
"Keith split opinion among fans but he was a great character for the game and will be genuinely missed."
He said Keith was a down to earth manager always ready to speak to the fans.
"He was always the first in the bar chatting to fans after the match.
"Whether you loved or hated him he was a fantastic bloke for the game.
"He was just a great bloke."
Matt said that for fans, his death has come 'out of nowhere'.
"He was jumping about on the touch-line last night, having lots of banter with Notts County fans, just being his usual self.
"I can guarantee that there will be a huge show of support at the next match."
Paul McGuire, community manager at Macclesfield Town and manager of the first team at Wilmslow Albion Football Club, said: "Keith was a really nice guy.
"He was always happy to help the community and provide support and help to the kids in the area.
"He did a great job at Macclesfield Town and had got them into a decent position in the league.
"The team was going from strength to strengh and had a bright future."
