Police are set to switch sides to warn you about home safety... by posing as burglars.
Residents could be dragged from their beds as late as 2am by police checking their windows and doors are locked in a new tactic to slash burglaries across Macclesfield.
And if the robber-cops find a way in, they won’t hesitate to hammer on the door until they wake you up, whatever the hour.
Code-named ‘Operation Golden’,the new initiative will work between 4pm and 2am, and householders who fall foul of their checks will be told: "If we had been burglars, by now you would have lost cash, valuables such as a laptop or an iPod, sentimental items such as jewellery and possibly the car off your drive!"
Inspector Gareth Woods, heading up the operation in Macclesfield, admits some people will not be happy about the early-hour wake-up call.
"If we’re told to get lost then that’s a risk we take. It’s a difficult balance to strike," he said.
"The bottom line is officers get a mixed reception when doing anything like this, but I would say to any of my officers that if they see an insecure car or house to let the owner know no matter what time of day or night.
"Most reasonable people will say thanks for letting them know and are grateful.
He added: "Obviously we will be very discreet and won’t be trying every door in the town because that’s impossible. We will target areas where we have intelligence and know burglaries will be happening."
The operation, which will be rolled out across East Cheshire, is a response to the fact that nearly 40 per cent of all burglaries are enabled by unlocked doors or open windows. Officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are also distributing thousands of door hanger cards which list security checks to be carried out before anyone leaves home.
Chief Inspector Peter Crowcroft, in charge of Neighbourhood Policing in Cheshire Police Eastern Area, said: "There are burglars who specialise in sneak-ins. They walk around streets, nipping in and out of gardens and trying doors until they find one unlocked.
"Most of them don’t care if anyone is in the house. Even if the family is in the next room watching television or eating, the criminal will walk into the kitchen or hallway, grab a bag, purse, or some other item of value and be out again in seconds.
"These burglaries can be avoided by locking the door. Operation Golden is about raising the profile of security at home and keeping people safe."

We instituted a organisation to deal with criminals and it's become so twisted away from it's original purpose that it thinks it's acceptable to harass honest peaceful people for not using their property in a way that pleases the police.
I think most reasonable people would rather have the tax which is spent on this kind of policing handed back to them, so that they can spend it employing security guards of their own choosing who will at least understand their purpose.

I knocked on a neighbour's door as his car door on his drive was left clearly open and slightly ajar. He just glared at me saying "what's your problem, it's not raining or anything". Obviously, he felt entitled to leave his property at risk as long as it was on his side of the boundary.

How about poorer people who couldn't afford a security guard, even less so when they got broken into. And of course the rich would be ok, even better than they are now even.
Seems it would also create a very unlevel playing field.

No need to worry anymore if you hear somebody moving around downstairs in the middle of the night, its only your friendly neighborhood bobby. so go back to sleep your in safe hands.
Beware though if he says he has to take away your Flat screen TV, and computer, as he needs them for evidence, make sure he gives you a receipt. I know it can get hot in the middle of August, but windows can no longer be left open. so buy a fan.

I'd hire them to look after my property, I might even accept some advice from them, but I would make it clear that if they started banging on my door in the early hours of the morning, they'd be replaced.
"How about poorer people who couldn't afford a security guard, even less so when they got broken into."
That's sounds a bit like the silly elitist state socialist argument that we have to have all of our lives dictated to us by the state because anything else would be bad for the poor.
If everybody got the money which is currently spent on policing in equal shares, it wouldn't be an issue.

Black Flag,
And do you think that people that live on the breadline would spend that money on security? Or would that then just be their lookout and if anything bad happens then it's tough luck?

Again, that's sounds like the elitist state socialist attitude that says the ordinary person isn't capable of making his/her own decisions and needs the state to make all their decisions and spend all their money for them.
Why should anybody else be so arrogant as to think they are better at deciding what is right for those people than they are themselves?
