SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is planning to open a massive store in the heart of Poynton – creating 150 jobs for residents.
The multi-national has earmarked the site of the Texaco garage, car showroom and former cinema on London Road South to build a huge 15,000 sq ft store.
The state-of-the-art premises, with 110 free car parking spaces for customers, will only sell food.
And the company is hoping shop doors will open before Christmas 2008.
A Tesco spokesman said: “We did our research and 70 per cent of Poynton residents do their shopping elsewhere – so there is a need for this store.
“We are going to be working very closely with local people, councillors and community groups over the plans for the shop and will be dropping 12,000 flyers through letterboxes to hear the opinions of Poyntonians.”
He added the store would create 150 new jobs for local residents as it is Tesco’s policy to employ only people from the vicinity of their shops.
Poynton Parish Council were unable to comment on the scheme as they have not seen the plans, but Coun Laurence Clarke thinks residents will have a few concerns.
He said: “The store is planned for the site of the last petrol station in Poynton and people would be concerned that they would have to go to Hazel Grove for fuel.
“People would also be concerned about the impact on traffic it would have – London Road South is one of the busiest roads in Cheshire.
“There aren’t many old buildings in Poynton and some people won’t be happy that the old cinema will be going.”
Tesco is hosting a huge exhibition of the plans in the civic hall on Thursday, October 4, from 10am to 5pm, on Friday, October 5, from 11am to 7pm and on Saturday, October 6, from 9am to noon.
After a massive public consultation, the company plans to submit their planning application to Macclesfield Borough Council by the end of October.

We have ample facilities already.
I found out today that the recent road works on London Rd were to fit heavy duty electric cable - of enough capacity for a supermarket to be run on.
I hope all local residents against the Tesco proposal will be voicing their concerns at all available forums. Contact Nicholas Winterton. Contact your local Planning Officer Stephen Daniels at Macc Borough, email opposition to Planning Department, go to Civic Centre Oct 4th 5th 6th, attend any local meeting such as the AGM of Poynton Residents Association on 24th October. I also urge local traders to get together and argue against Tesco.
We must ACT. If we don't then Tesco will build whatever they want (despite their plans they frequently build larger premises than they gain permission) and our village will DIE.
PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!

If we can then we need to stop this development NOW!!!

The only petrol station in Poynton will dissapear and people will have to drive further to fill up, how green is that?
Other well established shops and businesses will go bust.
A listed buliding will be destroyed forever (Poynton Foyer Bar) and replaced by another bland Tesco store.

We are already spoilt for choice not only for supermarkets in the area but there are 2 in Macc and 1 in Handforth Dean, not to mention the smaller tesco express stores in Hazel Grove, cheadle Hulme and Bramhall, prehaps they will want the schools and churches next.
I wonder what our local MP and councillors have to say on this matter, if they support it they won't be getting the votes of my family or many Poynton residents.

Plus come along and lend some support before they send the bulldozers in....

I would also be concerned about the hours that Tesco plan to open the store. They often wish to be open 24 hrs. There are people living quite close to the planned site so opening hours would be an issue.

Spread the word, it seems there are still people out there unaware of the proposed Tesco Store.
It will be a disaster for Poynton traders, residents and our roads !! Get signing the petitions in the local shops and hopefully in the village.
Very concerned rersident

Isn`t it time that we stopped them from ruining all small businesses by refusing to use any Tesco?
