Roach Dynamos Under 11s, last year’s Premiership winners, would like to invite trialists for the position of goalkeeper.

After enjoying a very successful season becoming league champions and winners of seven prestigious tournaments we have lost two goalkeepers to academy status. Obviously we were very sorry to lose these players and wish them the very best for their futures.

Cup triumph hands Roach double

Roach Dynamos under 17s captured the Bolton Federation Jubilee Cup last weekend, adding to their League title as they
completed the double.

Roach were up against their league rivals Boothstown and the final, at Atherton LR’s ground, began with Roach having the first half advantage of playing down the slope.

Rochdalians under 17s, a team with a fair sprinkling of Heywood-based players, wrapped up a terrific season in the North Bury Junior League when they added the John Greenhalgh Memorial Trophy to the League Championship already sitting in the trophy cabinet.

Rochdalians went into the final full of confidence and it showed as they came out on top in an entertaining victory at the home of Accrington Stanley.

Roach Dynamos under 10s enjoyed a fantastic weekend away, beating every team they faced to lift the prized Main Cup in the prestigous Blackpool Tournament involving 24 teams from across the UK.

The Roach lads gave it their all over two days of intense competion to bring the trophy back to Heywood, conceding just two goals in total during the whole competion, both in the first 10 minutes of their first match on the first day.

No shame in quarter-final defeat for Gardeners

Gardeners lost out in the final of the Alan Haughton Memorial Trophy Quarter-Final as the Second Division side took on Premiership Champions Copperpot FC.

Gardeners were completely outplayed in the first half, with Copperpot going in at the interval deservedly 4-0 up after goals from Hodson, Hands (2) and Luker put the tie beyond any doubt.

Gardeners' promotion hopes were ended at the weekend after a 2-2 draw with DC United.

Gardeners were just edging affairs when, against the run of play, Luke Fields scored with a suberb overhead volley following a fine pass from Bleasedale and at half time, DC led 1-0.

After the disappointment of Good Friday's Cup Final defeat against Italia the Gardeners resumed their league programme on tuesday against The Bridge Inn with a 2-0 victory at Firgrove with goals from Smith and Rosser securing the points.

Then on Sunday the lads from Birch faced Rochdale Nomads who being comfortable with a mid-table position fielded a well under-strenght side even though the Gardeners still had an outside chance of promotion depending how results worked out.

A good humoured crowd of 200 turned up at Phoenix Park on Good Friday to watch the Rochdale Sunday League Butterworth Cup Final between The Gardeners Arms and Italia, both from the Rochdale and District SFL second division.

Both teams have been in a rich vein of form this year and with the two top scorers in the league appearing – Winters for the Gardeners and Scholes for Italia – a high-scoring shoot-out looked on the cards.

With a severely depleted squad the Gardeners Arms from Birch faced a difficult match against the improving Rochdale Nomads side at Bowlee Park on Sunday 21 March in the Butterworth Cup quarter final tie.

With the kick off delayed by 10 minutes whilst the spare pitch was prepared the experienced referee Kevin Kay got the match underway.

Roach Dynamos’ open age second team moved convincingly into fourth place with games in hands after an excellent 2-0 victory over Mostonians.

Both teams fielded young sides and in the first half the game was played mainly in the midfield, with few clear cut chances created.

The visitors were stunned by the quality of football played by their hosts, who are languishing at the bottom of the first division of The Manchester League.

The return of Andrew Tinker, Bryan Blackledge and Martin Magill proved to be just the tonic for an ailing St James who, without a win since before Christmas, produced a match-winning performance against Wilmslow Albion, at Phoenix Park on Saturday.

When at full strength Jimmies are a decent side and this was confirmed as the visitors were second best throughout the game, the home side dominating from start to finish.

A blustery wind and a bumpy pitch produced a scrappy 90 minutes of football when Gardeners entertained Royal Exchange at Bowlee in the Norden and Bamford Financial Services League Cup.

It was a game of hit and miss that had hardened supporters shaking their heads at the myriad of misplaced passes, clumsy tackles and woeful finishing.

Reid ruled out for the season

Heywood St James’ run of bad luck continued as it has been revealed the reliable long-serving Rhys Reid has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Jimmies’ versatile performer is awaiting a scan on what may well be a hernia problem, putting him out of action for some months.
