Heywood says goodbye to former Royal British Legion chief Terry Hardy

Former Heywood British Legion chairman Terry Hardy
Friends, family and veterans gathered to celebrate the life of Terry Hardy.

The former chairman of the Royal British Legion in Heywood died in January, aged 74, and branch members joined his loved ones at Terry's funeral.

Born in Collyhurst, Terry spent most of his life in Darnhill, becoming well-known as an entertainer in pubs such as The Highlander and latterly living at Brackenhall Court.

He had three daughters, Deborah, Paula and Lisa, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, including Poppy, who was born on Armistice Day last year and named in honour of her great-grandad's work.

Terry was involved with the Legion for decades and replaced Alice Armstrong as branch chairman in 2009.

In 2005, he was the first person to lay a wreath on behalf of the town at London's Remembrance Day service.

His funeral took place at Our Lady and St Paul's Church and Blackley Crematorium and featured Legion standard bearer Katy Murphy.

Terry's family members said they will remember him as 'the life and soul of the party' and asked for any donations to be made to The Christie or Help for Heroes.
