Churches invite town voices to be united in songs of praise

A carol concert for the whole town takes place at St Luke's Church on Tuesday, December 13, from 7pm.

The event is organised by Churches Together in Heywood and features entertainment from Rochdale Music Service musicians, who will be rehearsing from 6pm.

Three local primary schools are also taking part, as well as two adult choirs, and there will be various readings related to the story of Christmas.

St Luke's church heating is up and running in time for the event, after a campaign by the Advertiser, various fund-raising events and a grant from Viridor Credits.

Organiser, Margaret Schofield, said: “We want to let everyone in the town know about this event to get the church as full as possible. It is not just for members of churches and all are welcome to come along.”

St Luke's Sunday School member, Phoebe Bamford, 10, won a competition to design a poster advertising the event, which is now featured as a banner outside the church, while youngsters Trevor Walch and Andrew Pitts won a contest to design a Christmas card to be sent out to 14,000 homes in Heywood.

After the concert, the audience is invited to St Joseph's Church for mince pies and mulled wine.
