Glossop Judo Club’s fighters have been busy winning medals over the last couple of weekends.
Many of the club’s younger children travelled over to Llandudno for the 2010 Junction Mini-Mons whilst the more experienced fighters took part in the North West Open Championships in St Helens.
In Llandudno the event was open to fighters graded orange belt and below and it was a good chance for many of them to get some valuable experience at a competition away from the club.
Representing the Glossop club were Jamie Hallows, Ben Hunter, Lucy Hancer, Scott Brelsford, Drew Thornley, Owen Brelsford, Dylan Sanderson, James Hudson and Chris Shaw.
Bronze medals were won by Shaw, Hudson, Thornley, Owen Brelsford and Hallows.
Gold medals were won by Hunter, Hancer, Scott Brelsford and Sanderson with the latter also winning a silver medal after being asked to compete in a second group.
There were some fine displays of judo from this younger group of fighters with Scott Brelsford being presented with a player of the day award back at the club.
At St Helens, four of the club’s representatives competed in another of the selection events for the national squad.
One of the harder events on the domestic judo calendar, 750 of the country’s best fighters were in action at Sutton Leisure Centre.
Competing for Glossop this year was Rhiannon Baldwin and Eric Ham in the pre-cadet section (under-15), along with Tom Greenough and Vikki Walton in the cadets (under-17).
Greenough fought well but had a tough draw, losing his first two fights, while Walton won two of her three fights to win a bronze medal.
Rhiannon continued the club’s success, also winning a bronze medal, while England international Ham won all four of his fights to add another title and gold medal to his collection.
He remains ranked number one in the country in his age group and is undefeated in the four-event series with a maximum of 20 points.
Baldwin’s two bronze medals sees her placed at a very creditable number two on 12 points, while Walton is joint third with six points.
